Commentary: Factory sector stalls on doubts about Europe, fiscal cliff

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — There’s no way to sugarcoat it: The already-sluggish U.S. economy is stalling out, stung by doubts about our economic and fiscal future.

The Institute for Supply Management Institute reported that its manufacturing index dropped to 49.7% in June from 53.5% in May, signaling that the manufacturing sector is contracting for the first time since mid-2009. Read our complete news coverage of manufacturing activity shrinking in June.

Both the ISM headline index and the ISM new orders index plunged below 50% in June.

By itself, the decline in the ISM index below the benchmark 50% level does not mean that the economy is in a recession, but it does make it much more likely. A reading of 49.7% is consistent with slow, but positive growth of about 2.4%, according to the ISM.

The manufacturing sector has been the most robust part of the economy coming out of the recession, but that momentum has now been lost. The U.S. has now caught the fever racing through Europe and China.

The decline in the ISM was led by the biggest one-month drop in new orders since October 2001, just after the Twin Towers were destroyed. The new-orders index now stands at 47.8%, a level that’s extremely rare outside of recessions.

Production at factories continued to grow in June, just barely. And employment growth continued to shine in June, although how long that can last without more orders is anyone’s guess. The drop in the overall ISM was accompanied by a steep drop in the prices-paid index.

Manufacturing is no longer a dominant part of the U.S. economy, accounting for about 19% of the economy’s gross output and about 9% of employment.

However, the factory sector reacts quickly to changing economic circumstances and can serve as a sort of canary in the coal mine for the rest of the economy. Cutbacks in manufacturing inevitably lead to reductions in the services industries.

Typically, a large drop in the ISM index comes from a large shock to the economy. We haven’t had a large shock this time, just a slow erosion of consumer and business confidence stemming from doubts about the global economy and about the fiscal cliff that looms at the beginning of 2013 in the United States.

And for both of those problems, there’s no sign of resolution in sight.

I respect your decision. However, I do believe being kind & helpful in this seem ruthless environment does not contradict each other.

I dont believe being heartless to be winner, instead they are 2 separate things.

I like to research & read up, I also like to share my thoughts & contribute to my group because since I put in so much efforts in my research I dont see the reasons to keep it for myself. Only when you open up to others, then others will open up to you.

As I said before I will not hesitate to short a mkt as long as it provide me a chance to do so, this is what I will do to the mkt. However to the human I will share, this is what I will do to human.

Maybe just a different in opinions, I do respect your action. Smiley

ah ger, you are right..... I have lost the feel to be kind.... When you win, it mean someone lost.... And people will only remember your wrong call even it is not a wrong call...... lol...

In markets, you need to be heartless to be winner, you need to be the 5% minority.... as you need to win the 95% majority money..... To be frank, I no longer need to be rich, that's why I am here to give my tcss thoery to see whether I can help some understand the markets..... There is no spoon feed thoery...... lol

TQ for the indicator! Is gd to share. Of course, there are all kinds on ppl in this forum. We are here to share with our open heart. Is up to them to believe it or not. End of the day, is you yourself has to be responsible for your own trading /investing decision. I hv my own indicator to track stocks for (swing)shorting and longing or for position trade. i am open to other indicator that may be gd to complement with my existing indicator..happy trading to all!

When the indicator work well with events....... only when there is mini BB group manupulating.... They make use of retails to join force to play the markets.... I have been TCSS in this markets long enough to say this us just a BS indicator.... And you will not survive in the markets for long time.... Just tcss.... lol

Sifu, I have not been stopped out... because I will still long more when it get lower.... You know I only got 20% all in contract to ride until now..... And just now I managed to enter another 20% .... So now I got 40% to ride on.... There is no real stop loss until I got my another 20% or before I sleep.... lo

I just like to share something here, not because I am pro to Shorting. No Shorting groups can change a strong Bull like this one (World rallies).

While you are happy doing your purchases do take note of this 3 things:

1) As time passes, the price of your purchase gradually goes up without you knowing (dont enter at the peak & get trapped)

2) Time to unload " lousy" stocks or stocks that give you nitemares (release the money to make a positive purchase)

3) Dont be greedy, look at volume for signs of tidal change (during such time volume is mostly real, no BB got time to setup)

Hope all forumers win big big & huat big big
