Forget chartered lah... there're always promises that they'll do well next quarter... blah blah blah.... And if they don't do well... its always due to industrial cycles. |

thanks billywows for the info...the future doesnt sound so fantastic though..i have imagined Chartered is competing or at least confident enough to compete with TMSC which Chia said they are not. - This means growth will not be as incrememtal as i would imagine...it will be a slow and steady growth if ever. the stock price will never skyrocket the way i imagined. :( :( |

Taiwan TSMC building a 3rd wafer factory in April '07. ---------------- Investors consider TSMC a gauge of the broader health of the electronics industry, because of its broad mix of products and customers.
TSMC's chips are used in computers, communications devices and consumer electronics, with Philips Electronics Ltd. and Motorola Inc. among its clients.
But analysts said the new plant doesn't mean TSMC is expecting a sharp increase in chip demand, as the new factory is unlikely to begin volume production until 2008.

CSM is investing into GSI to tap on their chip design services .... wonder how much is this investment?! Could burn a hole into CSM's share price. But, on long term till end Y2007, CSM will be HOT! For now, it will see-saw 1.15 - 1.35, unless Hedge Funds jump in to position for its expected hot chiong next year. Trade with care ya. |

it is making a strategic investment in Gateway Silicon Inc. (GSI), a Taiwan-based firm specializing in ASIC/System-on-Chip design services and intellectual property development and integration. "The two companies will collaborate on developing and optimizing design services while extending GSI's expertise to leverage Chartered's portfolio of value-added solutions," Chartered said in a statement. Details of the investment were not announced, although it said Taiwanese integrated device manufacturer Macronix International Co Ltd will continue to hold the majority stake in GSI. |

IBM, Chartered, Samsung Produce Advanced Mobile Technology for QUALCOMM
EAST FISHKILL, NY, SINGAPORE and SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, Oct 26, 2006 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX) -- Common Platform technology founding members IBM, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that they have successfully produced 90-nanometer (nm) chips for QUALCOMM Incorporated in their respective 300mm fabs.
Working with QUALCOMM, the Common Platform members have manufactured in volume leading-edge, low-power system-on-chip (SoC) products that support mobile telecommunications technologies. The QUALCOMM chips are being used in cellular phone chipsets and other devices to enable wireless communications worldwide. The Common Platform relationship with QUALCOMM extends past 90nm, to 65nm and beyond.
The Common Platform is a game-changing business model jointly developed by IBM, Chartered and Samsung to enable synchronized manufacturing across 300mm fabrication facilities at 90nm, 65nm and 45nm process technologies. Using this new approach, a single design can be multi-sourced to any of the three facilities, making it possible to produce nearly identical chips from any one of several manufacturing facilities around the globe. Because Common Platform technology allows "multi-sourcing," clients are not tied to a single vendor, but rather have unprecedented flexibility and choice.
About the Common Platform
IBM, Chartered and Samsung Electronics have broken new ground in the semiconductor industry with a unique collaboration focused on leading-edge, jointly developed digital CMOS process technologies and advanced manufacturing. The Common Platform model is further supported by a comprehensive ecosystem of design enablement and implementation business partners from the EDA, IP and design services industries.
This ecosystem allows foundry customers to potentially source their chip designs to multiple 300mm foundries with unprecedented flexibility and choice. The Common Platform model features 90nm, 65nm and 45nm technologies.
The Common Platform concept and initial collaboration began in November 2002 with an agreement between Chartered and IBM to jointly develop advanced technology and provide cross foundry manufacturing capacity to mutual customers.
Samsung joined the initiative in March 2004. Since then the three companies have worked with some of the world's leading electronics companies to provide access to the cutting-edge technology and seamless sourcing flexibility that Common Platform can enable.

Contradicting other forecasts that call for an industry downturn next year, a group of silicon wafer suppliers under industry association SEMI says SEMI conducted a consensus survey of its Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG), the results of which provide an outlook for the demand in silicon units for 2006 to 2009. Results show silicon shipments reaching 7.81 billion square inches this year, 8.2 billion square inches in 2007, 9.37 billion square inches in 2008, and 9.76 billion square inches in 2009. Total wafer shipments are expected to experience robust growth through the entire forecast period, with an average compound annual growth rate of over 10 percent from 2005 to 2009, the SMG reported. Tatsuhiko Shigematsu, chairman of SEMI?s SMG and technology officer of SUMCO Corp. noted, ?We are currently seeing unprecedented demand, driven by the end market electronic applications. The silicon segment that is experiencing the greatest growth is 300mm, which is anticipated to be over 30 percent of total silicon volumes in 2007,? in a statement. The survey included polished silicon wafers, including virgin test wafers, epitaxial silicon wafers, and non-polished silicon wafers shipped by the wafer manufacturers to the end-users. The Silicon Manufacturers Group acts as an independent special interest group within the SEMI structure and is open to SEMI members involved in manufacturing polycrystalline silicon, monocrystalline silicon or silicon wafers. |
