Tribute to The Farmer The original Food Provider, after Mother Nature. They toil in the soil that we may not spoil. They dip thier hands in the mud so that we may dig our bowl. They break their back so that we may break our fast. They work in rain and shine that we may weather our hunger Their low humble life sustains our high life ! All these and more without CEO's pay ! Divine's proxy on Earth ! SALUTE ! |

We are still using the traditional "tried and tested" method of boiling, stry frying, steaming for our cooking, so far we are 1/2 a century old, still in good health. No microwave cooking. I have always thought that micro-waving food may result in "irradiated" food that may cause cancer in the long term.

Can I do a survey here? Ok, how many of you are for or against the usage of microwave oven? I know of people who cook their food everyday with it, and those who swear they would never ever want ot try it, citing ill effects to health. Comments? I am very curious. |

Fairygal : that's and excellent point that u have brought up . thought share this 'food for thought' (excerpts): -------------- An even bigger question: Could brain exercises make people better at all kinds of thinking? One group said they thought they were quicker at everyday activities, such as reading instructions on medicine bottles or balancing a checkbook. The results of the study are enough to make Marsiske advise older people to learn a new language or play a new instrument. "The advice that I think people could comfortably take from this," Marsiske says, "is that if they challenge themselves to learn new things, including things that they might perceive as difficult in their later years, many older adults will not only achieve benefits from those challenges but those benefits will be long lasting." But other researchers say there's a better way to look at brain health. "One of the thoughts is that what's good is to enter old age with as good a brain as possible," says Margaret Gatz, a professor of psychology, gerontology and preventive medicine at the University of Southern California. Scientists use the term "cognitive reserve." "This is a term that's being used a lot now by dementia researchers," says Gatz. "And this is referring to the idea that, as one becomes older and there's inevitable biological changes to the brain ? not just Alzheimer's processes, but other biological changes ? is there enough of a cushion that one can keep functioning just fine?" In other words, do you already have enough brain power ? or cognitive ability ? in reserve to keep dementia at bay longer? Gatz believes that you should start challenging yourself mentally when you're younger, rather than waiting for old age to take Italian or piano lessons. Gatz's own studies of elderly twins show that ones who had mentally demanding jobs are less likely to get Alzheimer's. There are other things that are good for the brain that people of all ages can do, such as eat the right foods and exercise. Physical exercise has been linked to brain health. One recent study found that older people who started aerobic workouts actually increased the volume of their brain matter. So Gatz takes the stairs, walks and bikes. Gatz worries that the research might lead to telling people with dementia that it's their own fault. "I would not want to blame mom," says Gatz, "[because] she decided to skip the puzzle page in the paper." Researchers are learning more about the complex causes of dementia. But the main risk factors are still the same: old age and genetics. And those can't be changed, no matter how many crossword puzzles you do. Gatz does crossword puzzles. But not to ward off Alzheimer's. She does them for fun. "And while I'm working the puzzle, I'm usually feeling myself entering a state of greater relaxation," she says. "So I'm using the crossword puzzle as a tension reducer." Other research, Gatz says, suggests that avoiding stress and depression also will help you maintain a healthy brain. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6719135 |

Actually trading in stocks also keep one's brain in working condition, or rather more agile, besides the monetary reward or sometimes losses. | ||

hahaha ! Farmer , u are absolutely right ! those who dabble in stock market buy shares to enrich themselves either by capital appreciation and thru' dividends ... Its nice to see Farmer drop in and share in with the humour ...welcome ! Actually I was looking at the bigger picture , and ..sigh .... just wishing .. hahaha ! ok ... lets continue with this fun by addressing the 'concerns' of Farmer ..... if i am not wrong ... Fairprice is a 'national instituition' for the people ... it was began as a co-operative society ... so the welfare/benefits to the people comes in the forefront ...that's what i was aiming at ... even in my wish were to be granted , like shplayer said perhaps in a long time .. or never at all, .... i don't think the shares are going to be worthless .. just look at the "provision shop" ..it is fully stocked .. meaning the money is in the stocks, in the cashier's tiller and in the bank ... i know of no branch that gives goods on credit .. all cash ..no money no talk ... so their 'NTA' should be very healthy ..... hahaha ! and if u are concerned about the dividends ... perhaps the management could deccide on that : what to do with the remainder $45million (after the donation to the Charity Foundation ) ..isn't dividend paid out of the net profit ..? if not happy with the dividend offered (if any) by them , there are plenty other companies that provide stable dividends ... we are always free to park our money in the counters of our choice ....hahaha ! : ) |

hahaha ! at 6% the profit is $100 million therefore at 3% u still have a profit is $50 million besides u are already getting the 'dividend' in the form of cheaper goods ...hahaha ! and directly u are also helping ur fellow citizens by offering cheaper prices .. besides its co-opertaive society ... u help me i help u .. it works on the principle of mutual help and self help .. nobody joins a co-operative society to earn profit ... render service rather than make a profit ....... what more can u ask for .. win win all the way ...hahaha ! (very glad that this is an entertainment thread ... hahaha ! ) |

Re: Fairprice Charity Foundation If I could make a wish : instead of going the long winded way to show their philanthropical ways, why not reduce the profit margin in the first place and remove the GST component totally from all the items sold at NTUC. give the benefit directly to the all the people regardless of their financial status ... after all, everyone in singapore is working for Singapore Inc .. and everyone needs the neccessities to live .. to produce .... whether rich or poor ... the consumed ends finally in the sewerage ...there is no class distinction there ..hahaha ! the paper says ... $100 million net profit ..that makes it an about 6% net profit ..... reduce this . is the revenue of $1.8 billion inclusive of the 7% GST ? ... if yes, remove this in other words, curently the People are paying an extra 14% on top of the operative expenses ( rent, salaries, etc ) ... and talking about rent , can the govt declare that the premises of fairprice be state-land and be rent-free ? (don't know if they are paying rent or is the rent 'covered' by the suppliers , like it is popularly believed, by paying the 'shelf-rent' ) ... and plough the savings back to the People by reducing the prices even further .... hahaha ! need not worry for the staff of NTUC : meaning ... everyone on the staff team will not suffer by the reduction as evidenced as above .... we are just reducing the profit margin, GST, rent ... not cutting their salaries/wages or re-trenching the staff ... .... charity foundation ....$50 million over 10 years ...works out to $5 million per year . that means they still have $95 million net profit per year . being the largest "local provision shop", they could set the trend for other supermarkets to follow their lead and reduce the prices ... after all, the sink-in costs would have been already re-covered long long ago ...hahaha ! ....maybe there is a big hole in the my logic ... or maybe this is too simplistic .... despite all the fancy bells and whistles ... isn't the most basic understanding always a neat solution .......hahaha ! after all , at its basic .. it is still a Provision Shop .... ( no more Mama or Papa provision shops in future ... ) if we can "ban the chewing gum and make it stick " ... can't we make this wish stick too ! .........hahaha ! ideally , wouldn't it be wonderful if they can declare " We are tranparent : No Frills ! Everything item for sale is Suppliers' Cost + minimal operative costs + 3% Profit . No GST ! No Rent ! " ... hahaha ! ....and they can even run the Charity Foundation with altruistic motives if they still want to ....with an annual donation of $5 million for the next 10 years .... now that's truly .. for the people, by the people, of the people ... hahaha ! ..and oh yeah ... did u read the today's Recruit page on " give constructive feedback " ...hahaha ! *wink* |
