you must realise that there is still a big chunk of older & middle aged generation buying newspapers for their daily feed of information. These people are loyal patrons of Lianhe Wanbao, Berita Harian. In magazines, Men's Health (by SPH) has the largest subscription. To further add what I mean - if you breakdown the population by age, by income band, you will see older generation numbers are more than your Gen X, Gen Y etc. At one point if I remember, Spore is the 3rd most ageing population in the world. in addition, SPH did include the newer group of people to utilise their media space - SPH capture into new media such as the introduction of STOMP. Ads were publicised in STOMP & through gala events, functions. STOMP was one of the most popular online channel youngsters went to capture the latest gossips, news etc. on the other hand, we cannot compare SPH with Rupert Murdoch News Corp because they have different business units. E.g. 20th Century Fox owned by News Corp but SPH does NOT own the whole MediaCorp, only 20% of it. MediaCorp is still very much privatised. News Corp is directly impacted by the credit crunch but SPH does NOT to my knowledge have a mandate to invest in large stakes in other overseas media organization. The few they had was Sun newspapers etc. SPH as a consumer monopoly is still the favoured market leader in Spore for print media which is their main revenue stream, 70% of it. Hope this helps :)

Dont you guys think that SPH is in a declining industry in the long term? News is free everywhere now...google news, CNA news.... Traditional modes of advertisements in newspapers are not facing competition from other modes like Google Adsense, e.t.c. Seriously, from a long term perspective, dont really think this counter will make it. Look at how some of the media companies in a relatively more advanced nation of USA is faring. They are declining. A harbinger of the whats to come for SPH. SGDividends www.sgdivdends.blogspot.com |

Newspapers are really thin these days. There are pages where no advertisements exists. I recently also saw a CNN news clip that newspapers in the US and Europe are struggling because of dropping subscription rates. People tend to read news online now.

Do note that this is only the interim divds , the best of it is usually the final one which I predict could be 2-3x that amount. | ||

Tony has said the dividend will be not be rosy as year 2008.. My conservative guess for the dividend in early May would be 0.05-0.06 range. that would gives 2%-2.4% yields based on price of $2.50.. |
