History have proven this is not a high beta stock... So cannot give high expectation on this one.. Only long long have one big up and stay up- gradual gradient on the chart... This stock is for people who retire... Constant Div Policy... and no major up and down.. If not alot of uncle and aunty die of heart attack or stoke Not for people who wants to look for big capital in a short period... Lower risk lower return... |

Giving out free. Hmm, think Todays making money, it still giving out free, nowadays. Cost can be cut further, if hard copy papers r avail anywhere, no attendant, just a cast box. As for house subsription, esp for HDB n Condos, hourse owner just go downstair to collect their entitlement. Now, may can it out again. Remember decade yrs ago, at People Park Centre, there were 50 sets of nite paper placed at d escalator n a cash box. Know how, papers cleared extornishingly fast, but in d box only one 20cts coin collected by d tester, end of the nite. Incidentally, in d 80s, u just need to get a bus ticket at any of d ticket teller at d bus stop in Swiss n board d bus. Bus driver would never ask u for ticket ones. Of course AK kena asked lah, that time my outfits look like refugee mah. Rember, then got rufugee camp at upper thomson rd area????

Hahaha... At least when they wipe your PC, they can ask you to tell them about the latest news too ... Anyway, newspapers are also a must, though alone it's not enough for a lot of people... Especially when it's so cheap... just take a look at every Saturday's newspaper for instance... It's so bulky and yet it's so cheap.. and yet they still can make tons of money with it from advertising revenue alone. Maybe next time, they may think of giving it out free, since even then, they can still have profit. |

Unfortunately, it is mostly the 'illiterate' who will continue to follow old fashioned-newpapers alone. The new breed of homo sapiens will have nothing less than what they can get via the planet's most pervasive and potent wonder media, the Internet. On 'fundamentals', when a market is ready to take off, it will, regardless of any 'fundamentals' of individual stocks. We have already witnessed stocks with greatest fundamentals fall to a silly fraction of their highs only a few months ago. |

There's increasing competition, lots of articles to read online from various scources and the generations are getting more IT dependent. Yup, agree SPH needs to reinvent itself asap if they want to thrive on.

Newspaper business is a dying industry. I read CNN news that US newspapers are dropping like flies because people are now reading news online. SPH has to reinvent itself ASAP. |

Business Times - 12 Mar 2009 SPH cuts salaries up to 10% SINGAPORE - Asian media giant Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) said on Thursday it will cut monthly staff salaries by between 2 and 10 per cent to reduce costs as revenues fall. The salary cuts, which will take effect next month, and lower profit-related bonuses will enable the company to trim its wage bill by 20 per cent, SPH said in a statement. The wage cuts will affect about 3,000 staff, with higher paid employees bearing the brunt of the reductions, it said. SPH added that it would freeze hiring and cut operating expenses, without giving details. 'We need to bring our costs down in the face of a weaker advertising market and uncertain business environment,' said SPH chief executive Alan Chan. 'It is imperative that we prepare for a longer than expected downturn so that we can emerge stronger when the economy recovers.' Profit-related bonuses will also be slashed, with senior management expected to see a reduction of about 30 per cent in their total annual remuneration, the company said. SPH has seen its income affected by the global economic downturn with net profit in the first quarter to November falling 34.8 per cent to $73 million (US$47 million). |
