thanks Nostradamus for the insight. It seems to me that Chartered seems beset by a string of bad luck for some time now. Good news always tainted with bad news. |

AMD's earnings downgrade and rising uncertainty in the semicon undustry indicate demand weakness and could potentially curb CSM's performance over the next 2 quarters. AMD is a new customer win scheduled for Q3 delivery. However, delays look possible as Intel and AMD wage a price war. Outlook of the semicon industry also remains stalled by weakening PC and handset demands. H2 could be sluggish as orders could weaken amid rising inventories and aggressive price war. Outlook should be better in Q107 as it produces 65nm chips for Xbox. |

Guess it is always tough to compete with the world #1 chip maker..... but actually i am thinking for Q2 results, probably CSM havent start shipping AMD parts. earlier news is that CSM will start shipping in Q3... so if that is the case, CSM Q2 shouldnt be affect too much. |

Advanced Micro Devices warned that second-quarter sales would miss expectations as price cuts by rival Intel on chips to power desktop PCs hampered demand. The No. 2 chipmaker now expects second-quarter sales to fall 9% from the first quarter, short of its previous forecast for flat to slightly lower sales compared to the prior quarter. AMD has been locked in a battle over market share with top microprocessor maker Intel, which has been aggressively cutting prices to clear inventories and win back customers. Sales of entry-level and mainstream mobile and desktop processors were down for the quarter, the company said. Once relegated to matching advances by its larger rival, AMD turned the tables on Intel in recent years with innovations such as putting two processing cores in a single chip, enabling it to handle multiple tasks more efficiently. That technological edge translated into higher market share for AMD, especially in the server market. Intel still outsells it by a ratio of nearly 4:1 in desktop PCs and 9:1 in laptops. As CSM produces AMD chips, this news could have a negative impact on CSM. |

Perhaps cutting TSMC means job is being given to CSM instead? Another reason to cheer below: SINGAPORE ? Chartered Semiconductor hopes to leverage a new alliance with a Singapore research agency and a U.S photonics specialist to move high-performance photonic chips into mass production. The foundry signed an agreement this week (June 26) with the Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research's (Astar) Institute of Microelectronics (IME) and fabless startup SiOptical. The deal calls for Chartered to produce the results of a joint study into the application of optics to silicon ICs. SiOptical and Astar will collaborate over the next year on the development of CMOS-compatible fabrication technology for silicon-based photonic crystals and circuits, including silicon waveguides, optical transceivers and related fiber alignment structures. IME's Dim-Lee Kwong said the two organizations saw "tremendous potential" for the integration of photonic devices with electronics, which would allow computing and optical communication functions to be integrated in a single chip. A Chartered spokesperson declined to specify a timeline for manufacturing photonic chips, saying only that it "will manufacture these devices once SiOptical and IME have developed the designs and transferred them to Chartered for volume production." "In the case of the SiOptical-IME project, we will support their time-to-market [requirements] for these transceiver products," the spokesperson said. |
