In second and third place: doctors and judges. The poll, conducted in October, asked Singaporeans to rank a shortlist of 55 individuals and 40 professions according to their level of trustworthiness. It found that like in many other countries, Singaporeans tend to trust professions which save lives. Hence, jobs in the medical industry feature prominently in the top 10 trusted professions list. Besides doctors at second place, surgeons are ranked fifth, paramedics seventh, followed by nurses, pharmacists and dentists. Among the bottom 10 are journalists at 30th, hawkers at 34th and taxi drivers at 35th. With the 2008 financial crisis still fresh in people's minds, bankers and financial planners have scored lowly at 36th and 38th respectively. And despite a general faith in the Singapore government, politicians have been ranked second from the bottom at 39th place. Meanwhile, Singapore's most trusted man is High Courts Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong. In second place is wheelchair athlete Dr William Tan, followed by ambassador-at-large Prof Tommy Koh and police commissioner Khoo Boon Hui. Neuroscientists and newspaper columnist Dr Lee Wei Ling is the highest ranked woman at 5th place. And at the very bottom? Shock jock Glenn Ong, whose marital troubles got a public airing last year when he announced on air that he was separating from his wife, TV host Jamie Yeo. |
