THE Singapore stock market is into its fifth year of gains. It is only Feb 8, 2007, and already prices are up 8 per cent for the year. This brings the rise since 2003 to some 140 per cent. This is unprecedented.

THE Singapore stock market is into its fifth year of gains. It is only Feb 8, 2007, and already prices are up 8 per cent for the year. This brings the rise since 2003 to some 140 per cent. This is unprecedented.



In the past 20 years, a reversal would occur without fail after a three-year bull market. And the reversal would be severe. Witness the market tumbles which came during the Asian financial crisis and the dotcom bust. With these memories still fresh, it is no wonder many are getting a little cautious over the rather sharp appreciation in the last six months or so.

But there are good reasons to argue that this time, it is indeed different. In the next 20 years, Asian equities could follow the similar path taken by the US market in the early 1980s up till 2000. Except for one or two small blips - the biggest of which was Black Monday in October 1987 - the S&P 500 was primarily one-directional during that period. It rose from about 100 points in the early 80s to 1,550 in early 2000. That's a climb of 1,450 per cent or 14.7 per cent compounded every year over two decades.
