ENZER buys one of China's three private VSAT service providers FROM BEING a consumer electroncis distributor, Enzer has leapfrogged into a high-tech niche business by acquiring technology and infrastructure to deliver digital content to end-users. Its S$30 million acquisition of one of China's top 20 WAP services providers, Shanghai Mopie Information Technology (story link) comes hot on the heels of its purchase of one of China?s three private providers of VSAT solutions --- Shanghai Jianhua Telecommunications Satellite Co Ltd. Enzer announced this week it had acquired 51% in the PRC leading satellite communications service provider for S$2 million. Shanghai Jianhua delivers varsity tutorials and audio playback of lectures to computers connected to Internet via VSAT broadband. Licensed to collect payment from e-learners upon delivery of the education program?s curriculum content, the company has collaborated with Shanghai Jiaotong University for 5 years. Satellite penetration of China's broadband market is currently less than 0.5%, compared to 7% to 10% in America, says Shanghai Jianhua's founder Zhang Jianhua in an interview with Lianhe Zaobao. The Chinese government is promoting e-learning among impoverished rural folk who cannot afford urban living expenses and yet need education, says Enzer's executive director Loh Shiong Jin. Satellite communications has wider coverage compared to the terrestrial communications networks. For instance, broadband Internet access from vessels at sea or rural areas is enabled. The Chinese VSAT service provider has been around for a decade and has strategic partnerships with global leaders in the satellite communications industry. World No. 1 satellite network operator SES Global is developing its live satellite TV broadcast channels together with Shanghai Jianhua. World No. 2 satellite equipment maker, Israel's Gilat Satellite Networks is also co-developing multimedia satellite broadband facilities in China with Shanghai Jianhua. The following media Q&A session sheds some light on Enzer's development strategy: Q: Do you need licenses for operating these services? How easily are these licenses granted in the PRC? A: Separate licenses are needed for delivery of mobile phone content and satellite communications. Several licenses are required for what we are doing. Obtaining such licenses was easier in the past. Nowadays, the government has passed policies to raise barriers to entry because there are too many players in the market. Content providers need to deliver through us in order to obtain licensing rights. Q: Are you positioning Enzer as a communications company providing a payment platform for content providers? A: You could say that. In China, that could refer to the financial industry, the entertainment industry or the education industry. Q: How do you intend to grow your consumer electronics retail? A: At the moment, we intend to maintain the status quo. Loss-making units will be cut while profitable ones will be streamlined. The company will streamline its consumer electronics retail business. Shifting gears: from SuperBrand consumer electronics to China's information communications.
This includes retail of consumer electronics carrying Enzer?s brand, which was one of Singapore?s SuperBrands in each of the past three years. There are no plans as yet to discontinue retail of renowned brands such as Arcam, Bowers & Wilkins, Classe and Pristine to video and audiophiles under its up-market and lifestyle electronics business segment. Enzer ceased distributing electronics components this financial year. Q: Why not just hive off the old businesses since you are going into a new industry? A: We may eventually divest them, but not now. Our strategy is diversification rather than disposal. Q: What is your value proposition to potential investors in Enzer?s stock? A: When the base is negative, growth will be substantial in relative terms. |

it's not clear whether Enzer got a good deal. what's the valuation of Enzer now? after a Google search, i find there's an article on the purchase at www.nextinsight.com.sg but still not clear what's valuation now. |

恩泽企业收购两上海公司 两年内重心转向中国市场
近年来往商机勃勃的中国市场开拓生意的本地企业不计其数。电子零件和家电分销商恩泽企业(Enzer Corporation)也不例外。 恩泽日前以200万元收购上海建华卫星通信有限公司51%股权,并以3000万元完整收购Luckybull有限公司,得以接管其子公司摩龙(上海)信息科技有限公司及旗下上海摩派信息科技有限公司的业务。 业务重心转移中国 恩泽执行董事刘祥仁说:?集团目前将保留原有的业务,但我们在接下来的一两年内将把业务重心转移至中国市场。相信这两项收购将使恩泽从需求暴涨的卫星通讯与手机无线增值服务市场中受益。? 上海建华提供的是卫星宽频网络服务,能够快速并有效地传输信息、声音和影像。它自1998年成立,目前是中国三家私营超小型卫星接收器(VSAT)服务提供商之一。除了在中国卫星通讯业是数一数二的业者,上海建华也与全球各大卫星公司如新电信、以色列的吉拉特(Gilat)卫星网络公司等创办合资企业,以便提升它的环球地位。 上海建华创办人张建华指出:?中国的卫星通信市场有很大的发展空间。在美国,卫星通信的使用比率占所有通信量的7-10%,在中国却仅占少过0.5%。另外,卫星网络的营运与维修费用较其它陆地通信网络低,稳定度也较高。随着北京奥运的来临,如此有效的信息传递平台需求量必定大增。? 上海建华目前正与全球最大的卫星服务提供者欧洲卫星公司(SES Global)密切合作,发展卫星电视现场广播渠道,并与吉拉特卫星网络公司联手发展中国的多媒体卫星宽频设施。上海建华也希望开发更多卫星通信应用,及发展远程教育等电子培训(e-learning)。它在这方面已与上海交通大学合作了五年。 恩泽的另一项收购??摩派,提供的是手机无线增值服务。其最大的优势是为其它手机公司提供无线缴费服务,是中国移动通信(China Mobile)及中国联通(China Unicom)最大的服务提供者之一。 摩派总裁陈志钦表示:?由于中国政府已调高了进入这行业的门槛,因而摩派面临的竞争不大。摩派在中国是首20名的WAP服务提供者。我们希望将它的排名提升到前十名,将收入调高一倍以上。我们目前已有相当纯熟的娱乐服务提供平台,接下来希望继续往这方面及游戏、教育等发展,以便扩大市场份额。? 收购额其中的2000万元将以现金缴付,其余的1000万元资金则将透过配售新股获得。恩泽预测此业务将分别为现财年及下财年带来不少于200万元与500万元的净利。 刘祥仁表示:?我们已找到赞助商让摩派在三个月内于美国纽约自动报价股市(Nasdaq)上市。我们也希望上海建华能在两年内于美国纽约、香港或本地上市,目前还在考虑哪个市场较合适。? |
