Dow closes below 12,000 on bank jitters, oil prices

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell sharply on Friday with the Dow closing below 12,000 for the first time since mid-March as rising oil prices and warnings of more mortgage-related write-downs at banks reignited investor fears of worse to come.....

The session started on a negative note, as investors dumped commercial bank shares after Merrill Lynch said it sees dividend cuts and the need to raise more capital at Bank of America, Regions Financial, SunTrust Banks and Wachovia Corp.....

On Friday, all but one of the 30 Dow components ended in the red. Coca-Cola Co was the sole gainer, rising 0.6 percent to $53.66.

Leading the Dow percentage losers was General Motors, down $1.00 to $13.79. Rival Ford fell 51 cents to $5.81.

Technology shares also fell broadly.

Sandisk Corp, the world's No. 1 supplier of flash memory-based data storage cards used in music players and mobile phones, plummeted 9.7 percent to $21.16 after Citigroup cut its rating on the stock, citing slowing demand.

Among financial stocks, Bank of America lost 3.7 percent to $27.10 and Wachovia fell 1.9 percent to $17.43.

Shares of Merrill Lynch and other investment banks also took a hit as rumors circulated among traders that Merrill may give a profit warning and take additional write-downs on its mortgage holdings. Merrill's stock fell 4.6 percent to $35.95. A Merrill Lynch spokeswoman declined to comment.

Also in the mortgage-related sector, two Wall Street investment banks cut their earnings estimates for top U.S. home finance companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, citing persistent erosion in U.S. housing and mortgage credit.

The Mississippi River has breached or overtopped some two-dozen levees so far this week, with 25 more seen at risk before its expected crest near St. Louis, Missouri, on Sunday. No new levee breaches were reported early on Friday............

The flooding in five Midwest states was thought to have ruined at least 5 million acres (2 mln hectares)..........

Corn prices stabilized since hitting record highs above $8 a bushel this week at the Chicago Board of Trade. Soybean prices retreated, but traders said any significant rainfall -- or a summer drought -- could cause prices to take off again..............

Mississippi Surges Over Nearly a Dozen Levees
The swollen Mississippi River continued to spread destruction on Thursday, surging over nearly a dozen levees in the St. Louis area and flooding vast areas of farmland, as the region’s growing crisis pushed corn and soy prices toward record levels......

With weather forecasters calling for as many as two inches of rain in some parts of Missouri on Thursday, crews of emergency responders, sandbags in hand, were preparing for the worst....

Since the flooding began, 20 levees have been breached — 11 of them in the St. Louis area — and as many as 30 more were in peril. Estimates of the damage to farmland throughout the Midwest ranged from 2 million to 5 million acres of crops, pushing corn prices close to a record price of $8 a bushel. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is said to be planning a thorough review of the damage later this month.....

Around Meyer, farmers were devastated. “That’s all been lost, and it’s not going to be replanted this season,” said Gerald Jenkins, general manager of Ursa Farmers Cooperative, not far from Meyer. One of the cooperative’s grain elevators, in Meyer, was swamped, Mr. Jenkins said, another at risk.  Worse, Mr. Jenkins said he feared that so many fields under water would mean not much grain for the cooperative to sell come the fall harvest. “It’s a very sickening feeling,” he said......

SingTel Extends MVSAT Network Globally Via SES NEW SKIES Satellites
Posted on: Wednesday, 18 June 2008, 03:00 CDT

SES NEW SKIES, an SES company (Paris:SESG) (LuxX:SESG), announces that Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel), Asia's leading telecommunications group, is extending its suite of maritime satellite solutions globally by contracting capacity on SES NEW SKIES' NSS-7, NSS-703 and NSS-5 satellites. Terms of the three-year deal for up to 5MHz of capacity over the three satellites remain confidential.

Mr. Titus Yong, SingTel's Vice President of Satellite, said: "SingTel, one of Asia's leading satellite service providers, has been providing VSAT services with regional coverage for over two years. We are pleased to work with a top-tier global satellite service provider such as SES NEW SKIES to extend our reach to provide seamless and secure worldwide coverage over all major shipping routes."

The SES NEW SKIES satellites will also support demand for SingTel's OfficeAtSea@SingTel suite of Maritime VSAT solutions, which enable vessels to communicate seamlessly and cost-effectively with their headquarters on land. Solutions include 'always-on' unlimited broadband internet access, email, low-cost Voice over IP (VoIP) calls, GSM onboard and ship surveillance. These overcome the limitations of traditional maritime communications by allowing the ship to become a seamless extension of the shore-based office.

NewsChannel5.com, TN - 4 minutes ago
SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. - In the Midwest, millions of acres of farmland are flooded.

The result is higher grain prices, which is good news for many farmers in Tennessee.

It could be a banner year, but some farmers said it would be better if it were not for rising diesel and fertilizer costs.

The Iowa Farm Bureau said up to 3 million acres of corn and soybeans are under water in Iowa. And that's forcing prices to go up. Corn is now selling for nearly $7 a bushel, which is nearly double last year's average price.

Soybeans have hit $15 and wheat is approaching $7.

Finance sector jitters pull down Wall St-- AFP

NEW YORK - US stocks extended losses at the opening on Wednesday after a sharp drop in earnings reported by investment bank Morgan Stanley reinforced the negative mood a day after a sharp selloff.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 51.13 points (0.42 per cent) to 12,109.17 in the first exchanges after a slide of more than 100 points on Tuesday.

The tech-dominated Nasdaq composite shed 13.01 points (0.53 per cent) to 2,444.72 and the Standard & Poor's 500 index dipped 7.91 points (0.59 per cent) to 1,343.02.

The market failed to take solace from a quarterly earnings report from Wall Street giant Morgan Stanley, the latest of the big investment banks to report results.

The bank's profit fell 60 per cent from a year ago to US$1.026 billion, although it topped most analysts' forecasts.

The results were similar to those on Tuesday of rival Goldman Sachs, which saw a drop in profit but beat most forecasts.

Elsewhere, FedEx reported a 44 per cent drop in earnings but also beat expectations.

QUINCY, Ill., June 17 (Reuters) - Hundreds of volunteers on the surging Mississippi River piled sandbags atop strained levees on Tuesday as the worst Midwest flooding in 15 years delivered a blow to the U.S. economy and world food prices.

A levee broke in Gulfport, Illinois, sending muddy waters from the most important U.S. waterway cascading into nearby farmland and a few homes. No one was injured but authorities closed the bridge across the river to Burlington, Iowa.

Corn and soybean prices stayed near record levels as millions of acres of cropland have been lost or damaged in the world's largest grain exporter. Meat prices also soared, in line with the costs for feeding cattle, hogs and chickens.

SingTel in Talks to Buy a Stake in Chinese Operators (Update2)

By Andrea Tan and John Liu

June 17 (Bloomberg) -- Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., Southeast Asia's largest phone company, said it's in discussions with Chinese telephone operators as it seeks to enter the world's biggest telephone market by users.

The Singaporean carrier is in talks with Chinese phone companies about a potential investment, Chief Executive Officer Chua Sock Koong said today on the sidelines of an industry conference in Singapore.

``We would only be interested if we can be strategic investors to the local operator,'' Chua said. China is ``certainly a market that we've been monitoring.''

SingTel's talks follow agreements by Vodafone Group Plc, Telefonica SA and SK Telecom Co. to buy stakes in Chinese operators in a bid to enter a market that bans foreign companies from offering services. China, the world's fastest-growing major economy, is home to more handset users than the combined populations of the U.S., U.K. and Japan.

``The best option right now for foreign operators that want to get a piece of the Chinese market is to buy a stake in a local carrier,'' said Steven Liu, a telecommunications analyst at DBS Vickers Ltd. in Hong Kong. ``The Chinese market might open up more to foreign investment in the future, but it's unlikely in the short term.''

China Telecom Talks

China Telecom Corp., the nation's biggest fixed-line company, said last week it was in talks to sell a stake to a strategic investor. SingTel, SK Telecom and Qualcomm Inc. have approached the carrier, the Oriental Morning Post reported on its Web site June 4, citing unidentified people familiar with the situation.

The Chinese phone company and its parent are set to take over the smaller mobile-phone unit of rival China Unicom Ltd. as part of a government-led plan to merge the nation's six state- owned operators into three businesses that offer fixed-line and wireless services.      ................................

CBOT Soy Outlook: Seen 20-25c Higher On Midwest Flooding

CHICAGO (Dow Jones)--Ongoing concerns about flooding in key Midwestern crop areas are expected to shove Chicago Board of Trade soybean futures 20 to 25 cents per bushel higher Monday.

In overnight electronic trading, CBOT July soybeans soared 19 3/4 cents to $15.79 3/4. November soybeans jumped 24 3/4 cents to $15.55 3/4.

Excessive wetness, particularly in the top soybean-producing state of Iowa, continues to support CBOT soybeans and corn amid worries the water will lower yields and force producers to abandon acres.

"It's all about weather," said Joe Victor, vice president of marketing for Allendale.

The Midwest region could get a break from moisture in the near-term as "a deepening eastern USA trough may be strong enough to hold the heavier rains either south or west," DTN Meteorlogix said. However, eventually when the trough weakens and the warm air tries to move back into the Midwest, it will begin to rain again, the private weather firm said.

Crude palm oil futures on Malaysia's derivatives exchange ended higher Monday with support from the adverse weather in the U.S., trade participants said. Palm oil is a substitute for soyoil and closely tracks soyoil price movements.......................

16/6/08 DMG
SIA: Any rebounds to be limited

While the share price of Singapore Airlines (SIA SP) is approaching oversold levels as evidenced by the 14-day RSI and the break of the lower bollinger band, we caution that a technical rebound may still be off the cards as the violation of the lower band was accompanied with a series of lower highs which suggest that the current downtrend has not yet tapered off. Furthermore, engaging in long positions at present levels also may not be advisable, as the 50 & 100-day moving averages have converged at the technical gap area thus forming a strong barrier that should cap any potential upside.

Nevertheless, should share price continue with its fall, support at the 14.48 – 14.58 range should limit further downside. Resistance meanwhile is present at the 15.46 – 15.76 level by virtue of the aforesaid factors.
