DMX: Rides on China's digital media revolution
518X417_Ku_Juchang
It's easier for DMX to move analog video to the Internet than for Google or Yahoo to produce video content. Graphic: China's no.1 video website, Ku6.

DMX’S ENERGETIC LADY boss, Ms Jismyl Teo, is very excited about the development of the pay-TV market in China, where it is a leading digital media solutions provider.

At home in Singapore, Singtel’s mio TV and Starhub’s cable TV, each with over 100 channels of current affairs, sports, education movies and entertainment from TV stations around the world has been around for some years.

In contrast, China’s digital media industry is nascent and growing, said the lady CEO during an investor briefing yesterday, when she shared how its mandate to switch cable operators from analog to digital content delivery by 2015 is benefiting DMX.

Not possible in the analog days, any episode of popular Chinese TV drama is now easily searchable on www.ku6.com, which comes with home video-sharing features not unlike Youtube’s.

DMX's energetic lady CEO, Ms Jismyl Teo, talked animatedly as she stood for over 2 hours at yesterday's investor meeting.

DMX generated US$58.6 million of revenues during 2Q10, of which 74% came from China, compared with 72% in 2Q09.

The macro numbers look exciting:

Firstly, the government mandate has set the stage for “3-network convergence” - that is, integrating cable, telecom and Internet. And China has earmarked some US$5 billion of capital expenditure for this over the next two to three years.

Secondly, China’s cable TV market is expected to more than double its digital cable TV subscribers from 63 million in 2009 to 165 million by 2015.

In the past, systems integration for information communication technology (ICT, or the design and installation of IT architecture that connects a myriad of ICT equipment including servers and routers as well as diverse solutions ranging from data security, application acceleration and bandwidth management) contributed the bulk of DMX’s revenues.

But in Dec last year, KDDI, Japan’s no.2 telco player and the world’s only provider of fixed line, mobile and broadcasting services under-one-roof, took a 52%-stake in DMX by injecting S$183 million of cash.

With KDDI’s strong mobile and network convergence connection, Ms Teo envisions digital media to contribute half of the group’s top line in 5 years.

”We are targeting earnings growth of 20% or more a year over the next 5 years,” she adds.

Thks! Back in 1999 right after my confinement period I got terminated from my full time job with the meeky reason that my jobs had became obsolete. Hurt and broke with a baby in tow, I couldn't bring myself back to being employed again. So you could imagin how much money I have. I don't have lotsa money to begin with. After deducting my monthly expenses from the room rental that I have collected, I could only buy as much as I could afford. Though not alot. Now I just keep it as a kind of savings. I also didn't sell my SingTel shares which I bought with my CPF years backs. I remembered was about $2? correct me if I'm wrong.

Market speculation on why Mr Lim vested alot on this one is bc he wants to lead the company through restructuring, which could see the injection of new businesses. For long term, seems like a sunshine fr this one.

Genting's stockholder revolt

KUALA LUMPUR - GENTING Malaysia shareholders backed the company's move to acquire the UK casino operations of Genting Singapore in a 340 million pounds (S$718 million) deal despite a large number of votes against.

Shareholder revolts in Malaysia are rare and 38 per cent of the stockholders voting disapproved of the move in the resolution put to Tuesday's extraordinary meeting.

'People wanted assurances over the next three years to come over Genting UK's profitability,' said Genting's deputy chairman Mohammed Hanif Omar. -- REUTERS

BNP Paribas raises Genting Singapore (G13.SG) target price to $1.99 from $1.35, keeps Buy rating after casino operator reports strong 2Q earnings, erases doubts about profitability in first year of operations, says Dow Jones.

“Management highlighted that in the next two quarters, they will be increasing the number of tickets sold for the (Universal Studios) theme park (at Resorts World Sentosa), and expect arrivals to rise too. In 2H10, Singapore will not only see the main year-end holidays, but will also host the Formula 1 and the Youth Olympic Games, which imply a sharp rise in tourists to Singapore,” BNP Paribas says; adds, Genting Singapore “will set new record EBITDA performances in the subsequent quarters.”

Furthermore economy is lossing steam in recovery. U thk Genting will up more more.........hehe

2nd qtr is good is logical, bc ppl still fresh on the place of Genting SP. So lots of ppl rush there.....which indirect pushes up its revenue

As time passes by, Genting will need to come up with more things to attract more ppl.

But if economy down again, u thk ppl will want to waste money there..........thk thk thk.

Agreed with ipunter, don't fall in love with yr stock. Buy logically. What more, Genting still got quite an amount of debts to clear.

Cheers.
